McAllen, Texas – How important is the Rio Grande Valley for the 2020 Census? Important enough that Census Associate Director for Field Operations Tim Olson will be the keynote speaker at the 2020 U.S. Census Forum on Monday, November 18 at the McAllen Convention Center.
Tim Olson serves as the Associate Director for Field Operations with executive responsibility for data collection conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau for all surveys and censuses. Olson began his career at the Census Bureau in 1987 as a temporary employee in the Seattle region during the 1990 and 2000 Censuses. He joined the Census Bureau’s headquarters team in 2001 supporting Field Division’s Special Census program. In 2013, he became the agency’s first Respondent Advocate, and in 2015 became the Chief of Field Division.
Olson is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Commerce Department’s Gold and Silver Awards, two Census Bureau Bronze Medal Awards, and the Director’s Award for Innovation.
FUTURO RGV and the Lower Rio Grande Development Council joined forces to organize the 2020 U.S. Census Forum. The Forum is free and open to the public. The doors will open at 5:15 pm for people to view census-related displays and the Forum runs from 6 pm to 7 pm.
An all-star cast will serve as panelists, explaining why it is so important that every person in the Rio Grande Valley be counted next year. The Census will take place on April 1, 2020. People can respond to the 2020 Census online, through the telephone, or by mail. Census workers will visit people that do not self-respond by a certain date. The 2020 Census will determine many things vital to American life including how much the Valley will receive for highway and road construction, education dollars and how many representatives we have in the legislature in Austin and Congress in Washington.Â
