Edinburg, Texas — Palm Valley Animal Center (PVAC) is preparing to participate in Clear the Shelters, a national pet adoption event hosted by NBC/Telemundo on Saturday, Aug. 18. Doors will open at 9 a.m. at both locations: PVAC (2501 West Trenton Road-Edinburg Texas 78539) and The Laurie P. Andrews PAWS Center (2451 N US Expressway 281-Edinburg Texas 78541).
Palm Valley Animal Center continues their partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization. In efforts to pursue no-kill status, reaching 90%+ live release for the animals surrendered to our center, it remains clear that that the community lacks necessary resources to properly address the pet overpopulation crisis throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Despite continued efforts, PVAC is not currently equipped with proper facilities and resources to help address all animal welfare issues burdening the community.
Best Friends Animal Society recognizes the work being done by PVAC to save lives and the special challenges PVAC faces due to the inadequate resources in the community and the high level of need for these surgeries. In an attempt to help remedy these inadequacies, with funding from Best Friends Animal Society, PVAC was able to host Dr. Courtney H. Bridgeman, DVM with Dragonfly Veterinarian Services and Melissa Navarro, Vet Tech, City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, to help spay and neuter all eligible pets so that they can be ready for adoption in time for the Clear the Shelters adoption even on Aug. 18.
PVAC has set an ambitious goal for the community: to find homes for 400 pets in one day. The community can take advantage of adoption fees being 100% waived during the event, thanks to sponsors Bert Ogden Auto Group and H-E-B. All normal adoption perks will be available, such as spay/neuter surgery, microchip, first series of vaccinations, rabies shot, 30 days of pet insurance trial, medical & behavioral testing and collar & identification tags. Potential adopters must provide a photo ID and must be 18 years or older to adopt. The PVAC/PAWS team of staff and volunteers will be onsite to help adopters find their next BFF.
PVAC recognizes that in order to get closer to achieving no-kill status, the community needs to make access to low-cost spay/neuter a priority. Although the goal is to have all eligible pets spayed/neutered prior to being adopted, the truth is that PVAC faces the same issues the community does when it comes to access to these costly surgeries. Despite the ongoing partnership with the only low-cost spay and neuter clinic in Hidalgo County and partnerships with local vet clinics, the fact remains that there are too many animals and not enough access to surgeries out in the community.
PVAC takes full responsibility in the care provided to the tens of thousands of animals surrendered to the organization from the community and is dedicated to improving operations in both facilities (PVAC and PAWS) and all life-saving programs. As well as being transparent with the community regarding current organization funding, staffing and space limitations, the organization hopes to continue to have an open dialogue regarding the help needed from local communities.
