On June 2, 2023, Hidalgo County Precinct 4, the Hidalgo County 4-H Program and the South Texas Literacy Coalition hosted an unveiling event of a “Free Little Library” located at the entrance of the Precinct 4 Endowment Center in San Carlos.
“It brings me great pleasure that this is the second Little Library located on Precinct 4 grounds,” stated Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres. “It is very important that we must all do our part to promote access to literacy in the community.” The goal of the free little library is to build community, expand book access and inspire the love of literacy.
“The Little Free Library is named in memory of Veronica Perez, a former South Texas Literacy Coalition volunteer,” stated Dr. Ida Acuna, Interim CEO for the South Texas Literacy Coalition. “Veronica passed away in 2022 at the age of 88. She had been a volunteer with the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service and later for the STLC for a total of 25 years. She was from the San Carlos area and we wanted to honor her with the installation of a little free library at the San Carlos Center.”
“Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and the Hidalgo County 4-H Program are honored to partner with Precinct 4 and South Texas Literacy Coalition to honor one of our dear volunteers, Veronica Perez. We hope this new Free Little Library will promote literacy to all kids that enjoy the Endowment Center and the surrounding San Carlos area,” stated Dr. Andrea Valdez, Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service Extension Agent The free little library will contain books for kids of all ages to read, take and share with visitors to the Endowment Center.
