McALLEN, Texas – McAllen Public Library (MPL) invites families to its annual El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros celebration on Sunday, April 26, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Main Library, 4001 N. 23rd St. Día is a free, family-centered event honoring children and celebrating the music, stories and traditions of everyday life in the community. Families are invited to spend time together, move, laugh and leave with books in hand.

Día is a nationally recognized celebration which connects Children’s Day with literacy, reinforcing that books belong in every home and every child deserves access to stories that reflect their lives. At MPL, Día remains a celebration of family and culture first.

This year’s event features a Día Dance Party where parents, grandparents and children can share the dance floor and enjoy music together. Teens will also have a dedicated laser tag experience aspart of the larger celebration.

Children and teens will receive a free book while supplies last, made possible by a community book drive sponsored by Raising Cane’s and a book collection project by the South Texas ISD Preparatory Academy National Junior Honor Society.

“Día brings families into the library for a celebration that feels personal and meaningful,” said Library Director Kate Horan. “It’s about seeing children light up when they choose a book and watching families create memories together in our space.”

City Manager Isaac J. Tawil said, “Supporting events like Día shows our commitment to families in McAllen. When we invest in our children and provide access to books and cultural
experiences, we strengthen our entire community.”

Mayor Javier Villalobos added, “Día de los Niños is a celebration that reflects who we are as a city, it highlights the importance of family, culture and education, and we are proud to continue this tradition.”
