With hurricane season nearly here, officials in South Texas are concerned gaps left in a levee system after construction of the border wall was stopped earlier this year could make some areas more vulnerable to flooding.
There are at least four breaches created by construction crews in the levee system that protects a low lying area of Hidalgo County from flooding, according to Border Report. The county, which includes the town of McAllen, is located along the Rio Grande on the border with Mexico, about 65 miles inland from South Padre Island.
U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat who represents the area, said that the dirt levees are “severely compromised.”
“This poses a dangerous risk to residents in Hidalgo County and its surrounding areas, especially as hurricane season approaches and the threat of flooding intensifies,” Cuellar, vice chairman of the House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee, said.
