Leadership Mid Valley Class XV donated a portion of their fundraiser proceeds to Fuel the Frontline, a program created by the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce to collect donations to purchase meals for frontline employees. The program began in April, and through generous donations, the Weslaco Chamber has been able to purchase 200 meals for frontline employees at Knapp Medical Center, Weslaco Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, STHS ER Weslaco and Valley Baptist Micro Hospital. Leadership Mid Valley’s donation went to purchase 100 meals for the Weslaco Police and Fire Departments, as well as the City’s Emergency Management Office.

“The Weslaco Chamber has been working actively to provide information and support to businesses in our community through virtual forums and events amidst COVID-19,” remarked Barbara Garza, Weslaco Chamber President/CEO. “Fuel the Frontline is an effort that was created for the community to come together and support two important causes, supporting local restaurants and supporting our frontline employees.”

“We want to thank our local restaurant community for all their contributions and remind everyone to support local,” Garza continued. “Thank you to all our frontline employees for their commitment to our health and safety.”

As part of the Leadership Mid Valley program, every class is required to raise money for a trip to Austin and a class project. With the recent events surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, completion of the project came to a halt, so the class came up with alternatives to utilize the funds. The Fuel the Frontline program provided the perfect opportunity to give back to the community.

“Being a part of Leadership Mid-Valley Class XV has taught me how much it means to help around the community,” remarked LMV class member Sonya Gonzales. “It meant so much to be able to support our local frontliners knowing they are working around the clock in harm’s way.  Having to redirect our fundraiser money makes it even more memorable knowing Class XV was there when they needed us.”

“Our Leadership program has a 15-year track record,” Garza added. “These individuals didn’t let this pandemic stop them from taking the lead and supporting the community.”

The Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Bar B Cutie Weslaco for providing 100 bottled waters for the meals and  providing a curbside pickup spot at their location.
