LAREDO, Texas — The City of Laredo has signed an agreement with Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) and its Office of Continuing Education to have fifteen City employees pursue their Texas Certified Public Manager Program (CMP). The Memorandum of Understanding states that this will be an ongoing program and not limited to only those fifteen employees. This will train participants to best practices in municipal administration and management. TAMIU created the CMP Program upon signing an agreement with Texas State University in 2019.

Through this program, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze municipal administration and management cases
  • Apply concepts and theories in real-world practice
  • Evaluate municipal organizational climate and culture towards fostering change and improving employee productivity

“Continuing education is crucial,” states Keith Selman, Interim City Manager. “I am a firm believer that in order to provide the best public service to our community, we must grow individually. I am confident that our team leaders can now pursue this opportunity to grow professionally and personally through education. The partnership with TAMIU will serve as an attractive feature for aspiring professionals who desire to serve the community as part of the City team.”

“We are excited to be able to deliver CPM Program courses tailored to the needs of experienced practitioners such as Department Directors of the City of Laredo,” states Peter Haruna, TAMIU Professor and CPM Program Director. “The program is the outcome of trust-based collaboration between TAMIU and the City of Laredo. The courses are carefully designed for course participants to engage in critical self-reflection about their work experience, focusing on what works and how it can be improved. CPM program faculty are well-experienced in the areas that they are assigned to teach, and they are well-prepared to facilitate group work, managerial case analysis, as well as experience sharing and exchange.”
