The Laredo College Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Department is excited to announce its new fine arts Fields of Study in their new programmatic tracks, including a General Studies Track and a Studio Track. Laredo and surrounding areas’ creative minds will have the opportunity to take it to the next level because these Associate of Arts Degrees are now offered at LC.

“The amazing programs in our college have made an impactful change in students’ lives. It is important for our college to provide a wide variety of degrees for our community and surrounding areas that include the arts,” LC President Ricardo J. Solis said. “We can implement as many opportunities as possible to further the arts and lead students to success.”

The first cohort began in the 2020-2021 academic year, with students excited about having selected LC to start their educational career and programmatic track. The two degrees available offer quality courses that will polish the talent of those enrolled. Students enrolled in the General Studies Track must complete 35 CORE credits and 25 fine arts courses in the visual arts. Students enrolled in the Studio Track must complete 33 CORE credits and 27 fine arts courses.

These newly incorporated fields of study will prepare students with art coursework to strengthen their skills and portfolios to increase their possibilities of being accepted to a Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) program. Once students complete their 60 credit hours, they may transfer to any Texas university to pursue a BFA once accepted. Graduates will also have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to continue with a studio or graphic design degree, depending on the career path they wish to pursue.

Prospective students may register by following the same accessible and efficient enrollment and registration process as other degrees. Financial assistance, payment plans and scholarships are available for qualifying students. Interested individuals should seek advising directly from the experienced professors from the LC VPA Department.

Current students who have not selected a degree or are interested in pursuing a career in art may contact the LC art faculty, who are experts and will assist them through the advising process. They will also be able to explain LC program details, university programs and career choices.

The VPA Department is currently offering several in-demand art degrees, including an Associate of Arts in Dance, an Associate of Arts Degree with a Field of Study in Vocal Track and an Associate of Arts Degree with a Field of Study in Instrumental Track. LC Art Instructor and Department Chair Maria E. Soliz stated how anxious and excited the department feels about these comprehensive programs offered now locally. This fantastic opportunity to specialize in an arts degree to further their education provides students with limitless possibilities.
