Laredo College will demonstrate its appreciation and unwavering support of its faculty, and all local educators, by celebrating World Teachers’ Day at both campuses in a most unique way.
Starting Friday, Oct. 2 both campuses will honor educators by lighting up in blue for one week to celebrate the remarkable contribution of faculty in higher education. Those visiting the Ft. McIntosh campus will also be welcomed by a commemorative banner located at the entrance of the Falcon Bank Executive Conference Center.
Furthermore, Laredo College social media platforms will be filled with creative and celebratory messages from LC President Dr. Ricardo J. Solis, students and those who are appreciative of their teachers’ contribution to education.
“LC faculty are the primary connection to our student body,” President Solis said. “I have witnessed firsthand the genuine passion, steadfast commitment and countless hours of hard work that our instructors devote to their students and their profession. They make a significant difference in students’ lives and share their knowledge in order to prepare students for a promising future.
He also expressed that teachers were among the first to quickly adapt to changes associated with the current global pandemic. Their outstanding effort is yet another example of how teachers are leading in crisis and reimagining the future during this unprecedented year.
World Teachers’ Day, observed globally on Oct. 5, provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements and draw attention to the voices of teachers, who are at the heart of efforts to attain the global education target of leaving no one behind.
Since 1994, World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This recommendation sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment and teaching and learning conditions.
The recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 recommendation by covering teaching and research personnel in higher education.
