Laredo College Leadership, Excellence, and Academic Preparation in STEM (LEAPS) Program student Mathew Molina was recently selected as an ¡Adelante! Student Track Scholar. He obtained the opportunity to participate in the virtual Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) 34th Annual Conference from Oct. 25- Oct. 28.
“This October, I will be able to participate in a three-day leadership symposium where I will meet with exhibitors and recruiters,” Molina expressed with excitement.
This prestigious national conference offers the opportunity to be present for virtual educational bootcamps in finance and networking, career connections and guidance, and awards and recognitions.
It provides a unique forum to share information and ideas for the best and most promising practices in the education of Hispanics. Its purpose is to showcase successful, effective and exemplary programs and initiatives of HACU-member institutions.
HACU promotes and expands strategic alliances for collaboration between HACU-member institutions and public and private sector organizations. HACU also fosters and identifies graduate education opportunities for Hispanic students and graduates, and promotes greater Hispanic participation in scholarships, fellowships and internships.
Attending the conference is not the only benefit Molina will receive. He will also be able to participate in four leadership development webinars throughout the year, obtain an annual membership as a HACU student and form part of the Leaders-in-Residence Program.
The HACU Leader-in-Residence Program is very competitive. Students receive leadership and career development training. Participants will also be expected to conduct an information session on HACU internships, scholarships and other services on their campus as well as assist in increasing engagement of their fellow students in HACU’s programs and advocacy efforts.
“I would like to thank my advisor Sara Saldaña for [leading me toward] this opportunity,” he said. Molina competed with students from all over the nation for this opportunity and was the sole representative from Laredo College.
Molina is majoring in computer science and plans to transfer to Texas A & M University-College Station. He has completed his first undergraduate research project with the LEAPS Program.
