LAREDO, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Laredo Port of Entry, encountered a man wanted for homicide in Arkansas.
“Bringing a fugitive to justice is not only about the arrest, but also about honoring the lives lost in this particular incident and ensuring accountability,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “Through interagency collaboration, we can intercept these wanted individuals in the pursuit of justice.”
On March 7, CBP officers at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge referred bus passenger Luis Antonio Vega Romero, 43, a Mexican citizen, for secondary inspection. During secondary examination, CBP officers utilizing biometric verification and federal law enforcement databases, verified his identity and discovered that he was the subject of an active felony warrant for negligent vehicular homicide, manslaughter, issued by the Prairie County Sheriff’s Office in Des Arc, Arkansas. CBP officers confirmed the warrant and transported Vega Romero to the Webb County jail to await criminal proceedings.
In Arkansas, a motorist can be charged with “negligent homicide” (also called “vehicular homicide”) for negligently causing the death of another person while driving. This type of charge is classified as a Class C felony.
Criminal charges are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
