Lamar Academy trio commit to major learning institutions

McAllen ISD is proud to announce that three seniors, participating in the International Baccalaureate Programme, have a bright future on the horizon.  

They are Paloma Juarez of McAllen Memorial High (Emory University), Elizabeth Vitek (Mount Holyoke College), also of Memorial High and Mia Honrubia (Cornell University) of McAllen High School. All three participate in McAllen ISD’s IB Programme based at Lamar Academy. 

They applied in the early decision admissions cycle and are now committed as members of the graduating class of 2025.

Paloma Juarez

Juarez will attend Emory University located in Atlanta. Founded in 1836, the mission of Emory University is to create, teach and apply knowledge across all disciplines. She will join a select group of scholars from around the world and plans to major in biological sciences.

Elizabeth Vitek

Vitek is bound for Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Founded in 1837, Mount Holyoke aims to prepare young women for the dynamics of an ever changing world. She will join a diverse group of students and plans to major in astronomy.   

 

Mia Honrubia

Honrubia will attend Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1865, Cornell is a member of the Ivy League with the vision and mission to discover, preserve and disseminate knowledge to the next generation of global citizens. She will join a talented select group of students from around the globe and plans to major in Human Biology, Health and Society.

McAllen ISD has been recognized for having one of the top IB Programmes in the world with a historic diploma-earning rate of 94.4%.  In 2001, McAllen ISD became the first in the Rio Grande Valley to offer this challenging framework with a focus is on the intellectual, social, emotional and personal development of the student.
