BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS-NOV. 14, 2013-Guitarists from The University of Texas at Brownsville and the Brownsville Independent School District will present the 15th annual “La Noche de La Guitarra” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21.
The concert supports scholarships, travel to music competitions, basic equipment and supplies for several music programs in the community.
“The public is invited to come out and enjoy an evening of lively rhythm, jazzy riffs and the romantic sound of the classical guitar,” said Dr. Michael Quantz, Professor and
Director of the Guitar Ensemble. “We will feature acoustic solos and some of the best acoustic guitar in ensemble you can see anywhere.”
The concert will be held at the TSC Arts Center, and it will showcase the developing talent in BISD when the Brownsville Lopez and Hanna High School guitar ensembles perform. They will be followed by the UTB guitar ensembles, the One O’clock and the Two O’clock.
“We usually begin the show with some of our most talented high school guitarists who audition for a solo spot. Then we have groups of acoustic guitars playing everything from jazz to classical and flamenco,” Quantz said.
As an added highlight of the concert, the One O’clock Guitar Ensemble will join with the UTB Flute Choir for “Flautarra” a combined flute and guitar ensemble. The students will perform selections from the program they will take to the world’s largest music education convention, the Texas Music Educators Convention in San Antonio in February.
Tickets for “La Noche de La Guitarra” are $7 and can be purchased at the TSC Arts Center Box Office on the day of the concert. The box office will open at 6:30 p.m.
