RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Wednesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) juniors Misha Kvantaliani and George Hutchings earned WAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.
Kvantaliani was named the WAC Singles Athlete of the Week after going 1-1 when the Vaqueros visited Lafayette, LA over the weekend. Kvantaliani rallied to defeat No. 38 Louisiana’s Karlo Kajin 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in an extremely competitive No. 1 match. He fell to Omar Morsy of Nicholls State. Kvantaliani boasts a 6-5 singles record playing as UTRGV’s No. 1.
Kvantaliani and Hutchings were named the WAC Doubles Team of the Week after handily defeating Nicholls’ team of Nicola Weherle/Piyush Salekar 6-2 in the No. 1 flight on Saturday. This is the third time Hutchings has been honored for his doubles play, receiving the recognition twice in 2020.
The Vaqueros (3-10) will be back in action Friday at 9 a.m. at New Mexico State.
