McALLEN, Texas – Judge Sergio Valdez proudly announces his intent to seek a fourth term for County Court at Law No. 7 and will be on the ballot for the Democratic March 2024 Primary. Underscoring his compassion and integrity as the foundation and guiding principles of his re-election campaign, he approaches his twelfth year of judicious service. Judge Valdez reaffirms his commitment to the community and his constituents as he recently said, “It’s with great honor that I seek re-election for the office of Court at Law No. 7 and continue the work I started eleven years ago. All of my duties and responsibilities are voluntary with selfless service for all. I have performed these duties with great pride and humility to help better serve Hidalgo County.”
A native of Portland, Oregon and raised in the diligent culture of migrant farmworkers, Judge Valdez’s formative years were marked by family solidarity and a firm work ethic. From laboring in fields across America to achieving legal prominence, his life story is a beacon of hope and the accomplishing the American Dream. With a personal narrative interwoven with pride of service — from his military tenure in the Texas Army National Guard to his marriage with Macrina Gonzalez, an esteemed area educator — his legal career is notable for its zealous defense of the underserved with landmark cases that have merited national recognition.
His judicial accomplishments in his current tenure include a decisive reduction in case backlogs with his resolve for an efficient and responsive legal system. He was the first court in all of Hidalgo County to return to live hearings and to conduct the first two-jury trials as the county came out of the pandemic. For the past three years, Judge Valdez has been the Presiding Judge for all ten County Court at Law judges and is responsible overseeing the courts.
Reflecting on his years of service, Judge Valdez said, “Experience matters and I believe my diverse and vast background in the legal field, litigating and presiding over thousands of judicial cases gives me a well-rounded perspective that serves me well going forward as your judge. I believe that my accomplishments, experience and diverse background make me the most qualified candidate to seek again the judicial office of County Court at Law No. 7.”
Judge Valdez is responsible for the Indigent Defense Program which affords all indigent defendants the right to have a court appointed attorney as afforded by the U.S. Constitution. He is a member of the Bail Bond Board which oversees the manner in which bail bond companies and attorneys are posting bonds for the release of defendants from the county jail. He was selected to run the DWI Court Program which counsels 150 participants and in which the reoffending rate is less than 2%, as opposed to the ongoing rate of approximately 28%.

Judge Valdez will be on the Democratic Party ballot in March 2024 and intends to campaign in all the communities of Hidalgo County the remainder of the year through next spring. “I look forward to meeting more and more of the good people of Hidalgo County during my many visits to each of our communities,” said Judge Valdez.
