EDINBURG – Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez issued a declaration disaster on Monday in the wake of the weekend storms that caused major damage to much of the region. He also asked Governor Greg Abbott to declare a state of emergency for Texas.

The disaster declaration is the first step in requesting state and federal assistance to deal with damage caused by the storm, which spawned 80 mph winds and left many in Hidalgo County without power and well as damaging several buildings.

“I have determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that an effective response is beyond the capability of the local jurisdiction to control,” Cortez wrote to Abbott. “I am requesting that you declare a state of emergency for the state of Texas and issue appropriate directives to deal with the emergency.”

The disaster declaration went into effect immediately and will remain in effect for seven days unless the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court decides to extend it.
