RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s basketball team learned on Monday that junior Justin Johnson earned Second Team All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and All-Newcomer Team honors as voted on by the conference head coaches based on his play during WAC competition.
During WAC play, Johnson averaged 18.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 48.9% from the field in 18 games (16 starts).
Johnson ranked second in the WAC in scoring, third in defensive rebounding (6.5), fourth in rebounding and minutes per game (34.8), and seventh in field goal percentage.
Johnson reached double-figures in scoring in 17 out of 18 WAC games, including a career-high 38 points on 14-of-23 shooting (60.9%) at California Baptist on Feb. 12.
UTRGV opens the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament against #8 California Baptist in the first round on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
