RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s soccer team learned on Thursday that junior defender Jan Engels has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team.
Engels is one of nine student-athletes to represent the District 7 Team and one of three student-athletes selected from the Western Athletic Conference.
This season, Engels played in 15 matches while starting in 13 of them and scored four goals with two assists for 10 points. Engels was named an All-WAC Honorable Mention this past spring while earning All-WAC Academic honors.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution. In addition, nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games at the position listed.
Honorees selected First Team Academic All-District will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-America honorees will be announced on December 10.
