The City of McAllen is proud to sponsor and host the third annual Festival Internacional de Poesía Latinoamericana (FEIPOL), which celebrates the Hispanic culture of the Rio Grande Valley, Mexico, and Central America through poetry, music, and art. The annual conference will feature a bevy of international-renowned poets and artists and other special guests who promote the arts and Hispanic culture.
According to Rossy Lima, founder, and FEIPol board member, the organization is reaching the international community by hosting poets from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Colombia and of course, from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, McAllen’s sister city. “We have also created an important alliance with the FILIJ (Festival Internacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil), in Tamaulipas, with the purpose of fostering literary and artistic exchange,” she said.
FEIPoL will be held at the McAllen Public Library from October 5-7, 2018 and is free and open to the public.
Poetry slams, poetry scavenger hunt, workshops, and presentations are all a part of this year’s event. Four
different school districts will bring their students to participate in the creative writing workshop to be led by
Harvard graduate and award-winning author Leonardo Lin, founder of “Musica Por El Cambio.”
“FEIPoL is the only festival in Texas dedicated to the Spanish speaking and bilingual community, with the purpose of uniting and celebrating the Latino culture, identity, and language, with all of the nuances of each country that combines for a rich and varied tapestry,” said City of McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “Come enjoy a celebration of the Latino culture through poetry, music, and art right here at your McAllen Public Library.”
With 40 poets from all over Latin America, moving art exhibits and music, among other surprises, attendees will experience poetry and art as they have never seen before. Attendees will get a chance to meet renown poets such as Philadelphia’s Poet Laureate, the Puerto Rican Raquel Salas, or the award-winning, international Colombian author, Carlos Aguasaco, whose work has been translated into Portuguese, Italian and Arabic. They will also get to meet agents of change like the creator of “Treguas de Paz” Mónica Lucía González, The FEIPol festival will close with the viral sensation Reneé Goust, a singer and songwriter, straight from New York.
These are only a few of the talented poets, agents of change, artists and musicians our attendees will get to see, including local artists Gaby Rico and Luis Corpus, who will have art on display during the event.
