PHARR, Texas – PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School hosted its 9th Annual STEM Camp with the theme “Guardians of STEM” inspired by the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” on March 8, 2024.
With a focus on fostering innovation and exploration, over 200 current 8th-grade students from across Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) joined the ranks of Guardian elites as investigators on Aerospace and Astronomy while also discovering the fun and excitement of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Education.
Students had the opportunity to engage in a wide range of interactive sessions aimed at inspiring curiosity and passion for STEM including astronomy, programming, forensic science, and aviation just to name a few.
For Aubrey Vera, 8th-grade student at Austin Middle School, attending the STEM Camp sparked her interest in the numerous paths and career choices available.
“I have always been interested in pursuing a career in Engineering to one day become an Architect,” said Aubrey. “After spending the day here at T-STEM engaging in the lessons, rocketry piqued my interest and is something I am interested in exploring as a career option now.”
The main purpose of the annual camp is to introduce students to the college and career pathways that are centered around STEM fields and careers of the future while demonstrating concepts of 21st Century Learning Skills.
“We are thrilled to see such enthusiasm and engagement from our 8th-graders at this year’s STEM Camp,” said Sylvia Lizcano, principal at PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM ECHS. “Events like this provide invaluable opportunities for our students at an early age and spark that interest for STEM.”
In addition, Lizcano would like to thank Sames Auto Group for their donation of $3,000 towards the STEM Camp, the donation helped make the event a success and underscored the importance of partnerships and collaboration in promoting STEM education.
As an open-enrollment school district, PSJA ISD welcomes any student living anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley. Registration for the 2023-2024 school year is now open.
