McAllen, TX- The International Museum of Art & Science is honored to have received a $10,000 Relief Grant from Humanities Texas. Humanities Texas is grateful to have the opportunity to offer over $1M in emergency funding to more than 175 Texas cultural and educational nonprofits affected by COVID-19. These Relief Grants were made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the CARES Act signed into law on March 27, 2020.
IMAS will use these grant funds to support staff creating original cultural programs such as our annual Dia de los Muertos and Lunar New Year celebrations organized in collaboration with community partners. Typically, the museum’s annual fundraisers, A Night at the Brew-seum and Collage gala, raise over $370,000 each year to support the museum educational programs and exhibitions. With the disruption and uncertainty of holding these significant events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Relief Grants like those awarded by Humanities Texas will help sustain these cultural education programs in providing content and activities virtually or in-person once it is safe to do so. “This is vital support to fund original, engaging programs created by IMAS museum staff drawing inspiration from our permanent collections and exhibitions and working with partners to serve our community through discovery and exploration, especially for families,” said IMAS President and Executive Director Ann Fortescue.
Relief Grants were available for both general operating support and humanities programming. Between now and June 2021, funding will support operations; at-risk humanities positions; and projects at museums, libraries and archives, historic sites, colleges and universities, and other cultural nonprofits that have suffered losses as a result of the pandemic. Humanities Texas accepted applications on a rolling basis from April 27–June 9, 2020.
