PHARR – As part of the efforts to promote the importance of voting, 640 Kennedy Middle School students got to use the City of Pharr’s voting machines to conduct their Student Council Elections on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019.

According to Principal Luis Villarreal, the event aimed to help students become familiar with the electoral process by using real equipment. It taught them how voters play an integral part in shaping the government and their futures.

“Over 600 students got to use the machines to vote,” said Villarreal. “This is the first time we use real equipment. Our students usually use paper and pencil to vote.”

Students in grades 6th through 8th grade have been learning about the democratic and electoral classes during their social studies classes.

For 8th grade student Sofia Moreno using the real voting equipment inspired her to vote in the future.

“I felt like I was voting for the real President,” said Moreno. “It’s great that Kennedy Middle School and the City of Pharr, gave us the opportunity to use these machines.”
