LA JOYA, Texas – McAllen Border Patrol agents rescue two illegal aliens after the raft they were on capsizes in the Rio Grande.
Early this morning, a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO) air asset on patrol in La Joya, Texas, contacted McAllen agents via the service radio after they observed an overturned raft along with multiple subjects in the middle of the Rio Grande. Shortly thereafter, a McAllen riverine unit responded to assist the subjects in distress and, upon arrival, they observed two men struggling to stay afloat in the swift currents of the Rio Grande. Agents quickly extracted both men from the water and transported them to awaiting Border Patrol and Office of Field Operations Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) on the banks of the Rio Grande. Both subjects were found to be in good health after the EMTs provided them with basic medical attention. During the rescue, the CBP AMO air asset advised agents that a third subject in the water had made it back to Mexico safely.
The Rio Grande Valley Sector currently has multiple campaigns focused on rescues and danger awareness, such as “Operation Big Rig” and “No Se Arriesgue” to combat smuggling and ultimately save lives. Call 911 to report suspicious activity; “They’re humans, not cargo!”
