McAllen, Texas – Sam Houston Elementary received the first-ever student bank FDIC certificate in the nation. FDIC-Dallas representatives presented the Houstonville IBC Bank with the certificate during the recent Minitropolis® Showcase.

The Houstonville Minitropolis® IBC Bank completed an inspection process similar to what genuine banks go through to receive a FDIC certificate. The FDIC verified deposits to the Houstonville IBC Bank were made properly and then recommended to the FDIC in Dallas and Washington, D.C. the bank be certified. The FDIC certificate ensures the funds are safe for the students depositing their hard-earned Houstonville “Cougar Bucks.”

“The student bankers were so proud when they were presented the certificate,” IBC Bank-McAllen President and CEO R. David Guerra said. “The Minitropolis® program is instilling a sense of community pride in these children at a young age. We are honored to be a part of their learning process.”

The goal of the Houstonville Minitropolis® program is to help students gain an understanding of financial concepts while learning the value of leadership and responsibility that will set them up for success as adults.

IBC Bank works with school officials to continually develop the concept for the Houstonville Minitropolis®, which functions as a city within a school. Students earn pretend money which they can save or spend at Houstonville businesses.
