WESLACO, TX. – October 30, 2024—Since joining the Economic Development Corp. of Weslaco Board (EDCW) in 2018, Benita R. Valadez has made an indelible mark on the city’s economic landscape, leaving a legacy of achievement significantly benefiting Weslaco’s economic growth.
During her tenure, Valadez was essential in approving 110 incentive projects, which generated 1,617 jobs and attracted over $115,687,450 in capital investment to Weslaco. Known for her hands-on leadership, Valadez went beyond boardroom discussions, actively participating in recruiting efforts to bring new businesses to the area and working to retain and expand existing ones. Focusing on small companies earned her a reputation as a local champion, as she dedicated herself to supporting their growth in Weslaco.
Valadez was recognized as a conservative guardian of taxpayers’ dollars, consistently ensuring that each project undertaken was a sound investment. Her meticulous approach to reviewing incentive proposals set her apart, as she carefully analyzed and considered every business opportunity that came before the board.
During her two consecutive three-year terms, Valadez accompanied EDCW staff and city officials to numerous recruitment tradeshows nationwide. These events enabled her to showcase Weslaco’s potential as an ideal location for new and expanding businesses. Through her involvement, she established direct connections with industries and fostered relationships crucial to attracting significant regional investments.
Valadez’s contributions to the EDCW board extended to acquiring 147 acres intended for Weslaco’s second “Class A” industrial park. She was instrumental in the infrastructure enhancements around this development, including widening the Mile 9 road and adding a new lift station along FM 1015, which improved access for residents at the Las Brisas development and bolstered industrial and commercial development in the area.
“Benita’s contributions to the board and our community have been monumental,” said Steven M. Valdez, Executive Director of the Weslaco EDC. “Her expertise and insight have not only brought significant projects and jobs to our city, but she has also fostered relationships that will continue to support Weslaco’s development for years to come. We will miss her expertise and passion on the board.”
Valadez is an active small business owner outside her board responsibilities in Weslaco, giving her a unique perspective on local small businesses’ challenges and opportunities. She has strongly advocated small business development, leveraging her role to push for initiatives supporting this vital sector of Weslaco’s economy.
One of her key initiatives was expanding small business grants for building façades and code-related improvements to older downtown buildings. She also played a crucial part in creating a new grant to support entrepreneurs and first-time business owners, adding valuable resources for small business growth in the area.
“Benita’s work ethic, vision, and commitment to our city have been truly inspiring,” says EDCW Board President Jerry Gonzalez. “From her efforts in reviewing, fine-tuning, and approving projects that have created jobs and drawn investments, her influence will be felt in Weslaco for years to come.”
Reflecting on her six-year tenure, Mayor Adrian Gonzalez praised Valadez’s contributions, saying, “Benita’s work with the EDCW has left a lasting impact on Weslaco’s economic future. The numerous companies that chose Weslaco during her time on the board will contribute to property and sales taxes, allowing us to invest in much-needed improvements to our city’s infrastructure. We are deeply grateful for her service and unwavering dedication to the community.”
As Valadez steps down from her role on the Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco’s Board of Directors, the City of Weslaco extends its sincere gratitude for her dedicated service and leadership. Her legacy of growth, innovation, and commitment to the community leaves a solid foundation for continued success in Weslaco’s future.
