RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday that the baseball team will host Texas on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium to highlight a 56-game 2022 regular season schedule.

The Texas game is one of 26 home games for UTRGV. Fans can guarantee their seats for the Texas game and all home games by purchasing season tickets online at UTRGVTickets.com or by contacting the UTRGV Ticket Sales and Operations team of Seth Jones (956-665-3877), Carlos Munoz (956-665-3747) and Eddie Galvan (956-665-3415) over the phone or through email at tickets@utrgv.edu.

This is Texas’ first trip to the Rio Grande Valley since 1971, when legacy institution Pan American took three out of four from the visiting Longhorns before later sweeping Texas in two games in San Antonio to win the District Championship and earn a berth in the College World Series.

“I know it’s been 51 years, so it’s very exciting to have Texas come down here,” UTRGV head coach Derek Matlock said. “For David Pierce, the head coach at Texas, to do this for us is really solid on his part. They may be number one in the country in the preseason polls, so it’ll be a tough game, but having a big crowd will make it fun having them in our yard. Pierce wants great competition and a great atmosphere and he knows he’s going to have that down here.”

UTRGV opens the season Feb. 18-20 with a three-game series against George Washington as part of the Al Olgetree Classic. The games are part of a weekend during which UTRGV will welcome back the 1971 College World Series team while honoring the 2022 Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Honor inductees.

Then, after a four-game weekend at Houston that includes two games against Texas Southern and two against host Houston, and a midweek game at Texas State, UTRGV returns home for eight games, starting with a four-game series against Youngstown State March 4-6. UTRGV hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on March 8 and then opens Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play March 11-13 against Abilene Christian.

UTRGV visits future WAC opponent Incarnate Word on March 15 ahead of a three-game series at Tarleton. UTRGV then closes out March with a home game against Houston Baptist on March 22, a three-game home series against Lamar March 25-27, and a return trip to Houston Baptist on March 29.

UTRGV opens April with a three-game series at Sam Houston before visiting Texas on April 5. UTRGV plays host to Stephen F. Austin April 8-10 and then visits Houston for a mid-week game ahead of the team’s only trip outside of Texas during the regular season, April 14-16 at New Mexico State. The New Mexico State series will not count toward the WAC standings as they are in different divisions and there is no interdivisional play this year.

UTRGV returns home to host Incarnate Word on April 19 before visiting Abilene Christian April 22-24.

After hosting Texas, UTRGV visits Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, the next day before hosting Tarleton April 29-May 1.

UTRGV plays two mid-week games the following week as well, visiting UTSA and then returning to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ahead of a weekend series at Lamar.

UTRGV plays its final home series May 13-15 against Sam Houston before closing out the regular season at Stephen F. Austin May 19-21.

The top four teams from each division advance to the WAC Tournament, which runs May 25-28 at Hohokam Stadium, the spring training home of the Oakland Athletics, in Mesa, Ariz. The WAC Tournament Champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

“I think it’s going to be exciting playing Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Abilene Christian, Lamar and Tarleton,” Matlock said. “I think these teams are going to be real rivals inside the state once we get going with them. We’ve got them home and home for three-game sets on the weekends. We’re going to really get to know each other by playing that many games. The Southwest Division’s going to be exciting. All the teams are great. They play hard. They’ve got great coaches. I think it’s going to be a plus for the WAC when it’s all said and done.”

All Friday home games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Saturday home games during WAC play start at 6 p.m. while the GW game starts at 1 p.m. and the Youngstown State doubleheader starts at noon. All Sunday home games start at 12 p.m. All Tuesday home games start at 6:30 p.m. Gates open one hour prior to first pitch.
