PHARR, Texas â€“ AAA Texas is projecting record travel for the Thanksgiving travel season with an estimated 5.8 million people heading at least 50 miles from home.

Austin, DFW, Houston, San Antonio and the Hill Country are among some of the top destinations for travelers gathering with family and friends.

To keep everyone safe on the road, TxDOT urges drivers to plan ahead, leave early and check vehicle maintenance.

Tips for drivers:

  • Check engine fluids, including oil, coolant and windshield washer fluid.
  • Check vehicle battery, lights and brakes.
  • Check tire pressure, tread depth and inspect tires for damage. Also, ensure a spare tire is ready.
  • Put an emergency road trip safety kit in the trunk that includes a flashlight (with fresh batteries), jumper cables or a portable jump starter and first-aid supplies.
  • Pack water and snacks.

Drivers are also encouraged to preplan the route to their destination by checking road conditions anywhere in Texas, at DriveTexas.Org.
