Edinburg, Texas – On Saturday, June 16, 2018, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm Rio Grande Valley residents are invited to participate in the Edinburg Juneteenth History Harvest at the Dustin Sekula Memorial Library.
Community members are encouraged to bring in items, pictures, and documents from their family collections that showcase the rich African-American heritage and culture of the Rio Grande Valley, past and present.
Scanning stations will be set up in the Library, staffed by sponsoring organizations Museum of South Texas History and The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley Special Collections who will digitize unique items along with collecting detailed documentation and pictures. The collection owners will be able to take their original materials home, along with free digital copies, provided that collection owners bring with them a thumb drive capable of holding the digitized files. The sponsoring organizations will create and retain a digital copy in accordance with the owner’s approval.
The objective of the History Harvest is to create a community collection from the area’s African American families documenting local, regional, and national history to be held at Museum of South Texas History and The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley Library and made available for research, teaching, and educational exhibitions.
