MISSION – A World War II veteran who never received the military medals that he earned will finally get the honor during a Pinning Ceremony 75 years after the war ended.
Veteran George Gamboa will be honored with the Occupation, and Victory Medal V at a Pinning Ceremony hosted by the Hidalgo County Veterans Service Office. The medals were awarded after a years-long effort by his daughter.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 26 at 1 p.m. at the Mission Chamber of Commerce located at 202 W. Tom Laundry in Mission.
“It’s never too late to be honored,” said Hidalgo County Department Head Veterans Service Officer Felix Rodriguez. “WWII veterans would often receive a certificate of service and would not be given an official discharge until they arrived home. Gamboa’s daughter reached out to our office to procure her father’s medals, and although he will not be present because of his stay in the hospice, we agreed that it was important to host a formal Pinning Ceremony.”
Gamboa’s family will be graciously accepting the two prestigious medals in his honor in-person and via Zoom.
