EDINBURG, Texas – The Hidalgo County Tax Office, along with its satellite sites, will begin closing public access to its offices every Wednesday, beginning April 6.  The public is encouraged to handle tax-related business online at www.hidalgocountytax.org or use our Drop Box Locations.  The offices will reopen to public traffic the remainder of each work week.

“We were forced to take this action because of a heavy workload as society begins to return to normal after two years of pandemic, combined with a high vacancy on our staff,” Hidalgo County Tax Assessor Collector Pablo Villarreal, Jr. said.

While the offices will be closed for public transactions on Wednesdays, employees will continue working inside to catch up on a backlog of title work, correspondence and other accounting duties in order to meet contractual obligations, Villarreal said.

“In addition, our office is doing its best to streamline and restructure office operations, including personnel changes, for more efficiency,” he said. Villarreal said the Tax Assessor Collector Office has had an unprecedented staff shortage at a time that labor shortages are affecting the rest of the country. Currently, there are 19 vacant positions.

Villarreal asked, “That our constituents please try to be patient as the wait time will be longer than usual. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your time and understanding.”
