EDINBURG, Texas – The season’s first prolonged cold front has spurred reminders that the Hidalgo County Community Service Agency has electric generators available to residents who qualify because of critical medical conditions such as those on kidney home dialysis, oxygen contractor, ventilator and heart monitors that require uninterrupted electricity.
The program, called Power Up Generator, provides the generators free of charge to help prevent electrical disruptions caused by weather for those residents whose health could be affected by a prolonged power failure.
Residents who believe they may qualify for a generator must follow these guidelines:
· Proof of income for the past 30 days including paystubs; Veteran Affairs checks; Social Security income; child support letters; food stamp award letters
· Household family income must be below 150 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL)
· Resident must rely on a home kidney dialysis machine, oxygen contractor, ventilator and or heart monitor
· Identification documents needed
· Those who qualify must take a fire/generator safety class offered by the Hidalgo County Fire Marshal’s office
Anyone who believes they meet the qualifying criteria are encouraged to apply for a free generator at the Hidalgo County Community Service Agency at 2524 N Closner Blvd. in Edinburg or call 956-383-6240.
