EDINBURG, Texas – The City of Edinburg has granted a Certificate of Occupancy to the County of Hidalgo, which initiates the process of opening the new courthouse for public use. The City of Edinburg issues this Certificate to all new construction within the city to fulfill structural and safety requirements in an effort to ensure the safety of the public.
“We know this has been a long time coming and we appreciate the public’s patience,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “But as we have said, our objective was to ensure the public’s safety in the most cost effective manner possible. We believe we have fulfilled that objective.”
The County now anticipates the following next steps: |
· The Texas Jail Standards Commission will schedule an inspection of the holding facilities within the courthouse to ensure compliance with state jail regulations. Upon approval by the State, the building will be handed over to Hidalgo County. |
· The County will then begin the process of moving millions of legal documents and hundreds of county employees into the courthouse. Once the physical transition is accomplished, then the process of officially opening the facility for public use will occur. |
· The County has already begun necessary steps related to Phase II of the construction project involving the demolition of the old courthouse structure. |
