EDINBURG, Texas – Hidalgo County is moving forward with the demolition of the Old Hidalgo County Courthouse in downtown Edinburg. Preparations are underway and residents will begin to see more activity at the site in the coming weeks.
The project began on November 17, 2025 and is estimated to be completed by September 4, 2026, weather permitting. Crews will work Monday through Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
An environmental survey of the building was recently completed. This survey identifies materials that need to be removed by licensed professionals so the structure can be cleaned and cleared.
The County is working closely with Noble Texas Builders, the contractor on the project, to make sure all cleanup and abatement work is done safely and responsibly. Once the cleanup phase begins, the public may hear hammering, equipment movement and debris hauling. Contractors will use dust control and air monitoring throughout the project to keep conditions safe for nearby homes and businesses.
At the same time, the City of Edinburg is moving forward with construction of the new downtown parking garage just north of the courthouse site. With both projects happening in the same area, traffic and pedestrian movement will be heavier than usual. Drivers, visitors and business owners are encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings while traveling through the courthouse square.
During the demolition, the following safety measures will be in place:
Daily safety audits will be carried out by the contractor
Dust will be managed with wind screens and daily water use
Work will respect quiet hours after 6 p.m. unless essential activities require extended time
Once complete, the courthouse square will feature added parking for jurors and visitors, and a redesigned meander walkway that will serve as a welcoming public space.
Hidalgo County appreciates the community’s patience as progress continues. The work on this site marks the next step in revitalizing the heart of downtown Edinburg.
