DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday that senior Alvaro Hernandez of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s golf team has earned First Team All-WAC honors while senior Pedro Lamadrid earned Second Team All-WAC honors, as voted on by the WAC head coaches.
Hernandez posted six top-10 finishes this year including five of those in the top-five. He is coming off of a fifth place finish at the WAC Championship earlier this week. Hernandez finished with a 71.48 stroke average this year, which is the second lowest in the WAC.
Hernandez shot the WAC’s lowest single round score of eight-under-par 64 in the first round of the Border Olympics, which is also the lowest single round score in program history. He went on to earn WAC Golfer of the Week honors for his performance at the Border Olympics where he finished tied for third with a three-round score of 208.
Lamadrid posted three top-10 finishes this year including a tie for third place at the Bearkat Invitational in March. Lamadrid finished with a 72.43 stroke average this year, which ranks eighth best in the WAC.
Hernandez and Lamadrid helped UTRGV set the program record for team single round score as it posted a 16-under par 272, the second lowest in the WAC this season, in the first round of the Border Olympics. UTRGV finished the Border Olympics with a three-round score of 853, which is the second lowest three-round team score in program history.
