The fire at the solid waste transfer site is under control, but ashes buried in the debris continue to smolder. Personnel from the Harlingen Fire Department, Harlingen Police Department and the Harlingen Public Works Department will work through the evening to remove remnants of the structure allowing firefighters to saturate hot areas. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although preliminary results indicate an accidental source perhaps sparked the blaze.
The Public Works Department expects slight delays each day with residential and business trash pickup for an undetermined amount of time to compensate for additional travel for trucks, but it’s not anticipated that the days posted at www.myharlingen.us for routine, normal garbage pickup service will change due to the fire.
