HARLINGEN, Texas – Harlingen native and longtime educator, Dr. Veronica Kortan, was named as interim superintendent by the Harlingen CISD Board of Trustees during a special board meeting on Monday, May 14, 2023.
The move comes after the current Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alicia Noyola announced her retirement during last week’s regularly scheduled Board meeting. Her resignation was accepted and approved by the board at Monday’s special board meeting. She will assume the role of Superintendent Emeritus through August 31, 2023 ensuring a smooth transition for the district and the next Superintendent.
Meanwhile, the board of trustees approved to move forward with a nationwide superintendent search.
Prior to becoming the Interim Superintendent, Dr. Kortan served in various roles ranging from teacher, to principal, to the Assistant Superintendent for Leadership & Innovation. In 2007, she founded the district’s Early College High School.
“I am humbled at the confidence of the Board and extremely honored to serve in this role. I am proud to be part of the HCISD team because we are synonymous with innovation and providing opportunities for students that change their lives. I want to thank Dr. Noyola for all she has done for our district and for her work to position the district to continue doing amazing things at HCISD.” said Kortan.
Dr. Kortan stated in open session that she will not be seeking the permanent position of superintendent but welcomes the opportunity to fill the role of interim superintendent.
HCISD Board President Dr. Belinda Reininger said, “I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Kortan. We thank her for stepping into this role. She has shown dedication and great leadership in several of our district initiatives and most recently with the development of our strategic plan. As a Board, we want to thank Dr. Noyola for all she has done and for her leadership.”
