McALLEN, Texas – The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) announces the return of Workshops Wednesdays presented by H-E-B Helping Here in the new year! The popular virtual program will come back for its third season January through October. Each month will feature a new virtual workshop on a different artist, art movement or medium. These workshops are great for beginner artists and anyone seeking a creative break.
With the generous support of a grant from H-E-B Helping Here, this program is free for all registrants. A limited number of supply kits are available for registration each month and are to be picked up the weekend prior to the live workshop. IMAS publishes supply lists ahead of the workshop to engage the broader community, encouraging them to tune in with their own art supplies, many of which can be found at a nearby H-E-B plus! or craft store. Local participants are eligible to enter the monthly giveaways by sharing their finished artworks with the museum.
Workshop Wednesdays take place once a month on IMAS Facebook at 4 PM live. The series kicks off in 2022 with Surrealist Collage inspired by “Imagined Worlds: Exploring the Carlos Melguizo Collection” on Wednesday, January 19. Workshops continue monthly through October with Intro to Figure Drawing, Textile Art, Recycled Sculpture inspired by “Industrial Nature” exhibit, Still Life Drawing, Mixed Media Self-Portrait, Illuminated Sculpture, Abstract Expressionism inspired by upcoming “Anne Marchand” exhibit, Alebrijes, and Pumpkin Pop Art.
Workshop Wednesdays began as a virtual series in March 2020 after the museum closed its doors temporarily. Claudia Martinez Gray, IMAS Director of Education, expresses, “Back then I was designing the workshops on my dining room table with the supplies I had at home. Now, with the grant support, I am able think beyond the realm of my kitchen and connect workshops to our current art exhibits or emerging artists. I am looking forward to the textile art workshop which is inspired by Mexican artist Pia Camil.”
Thousands of children, teens and adults have tuned in live or at their leisure on the IMAS YouTube channel to explore new art mediums at home along with IMAS Educators. Now IMAS is kicking off its 30th episode with the 2022 season and is grateful for the support of H-E-B Helping Here to ensure the community has this creative outlet.
