Ever since she could hold a pencil, Brooklyn Grimaldo has found joy in sketching and creating stories through art.
Now, the 18-year-old South Texas College student is turning that passion into a profession as she begins her journey towards an associate degree in Graphic Arts, determined to one day bring her own characters and animations to life.
Grimaldo is a graduate of Weslaco East High School and is in her first semester at STC while working as a work-study employee for the Student Activities and Wellness Department.
Choosing STC, she said, was an easy decision for her because it offered everything she needed such as affordability, convenience and flexibility, while keeping her close to home.
“I wanted to start somewhere close to home that fit my schedule and budget,” she said. “STC was the perfect choice for me because it offers so much support for students like me who are just starting out.”
Grimaldo’s passion for art began when she was just a kid with a pencil and a big imagination. What started as doodles soon turned into a dream of creating her own comics and animations, stories that would bring her characters and ideas to life.
“I started drawing as a kid, but near the end of elementary school is when I started doing it more often,” she said. “That’s when I realized it wasn’t just something I liked to do, it was something I loved. I would spend hours sketching characters, imagining their stories and thinking about how I could bring them to life through animation. I’ve always dreamed of creating my own animations and comics that inspire others the same way my favorite shows and artists inspire me.”
Her passion for creativity extends beyond the classroom. Through her work-study position, Grimaldo assists with student events, interacts with peers and helps promote campus life, all while developing valuable communication and leadership skills.
“I’ve always encouraged myself to take as many opportunities as possible,” she said. “When I saw the work-study position I applied right away. I really enjoy being a work study. This job requires me to talk to people and it’s given me more confidence and taught me useful skills that I know will help me in the future.”
When she is not working or in class, Grimaldo can often be found in one of her favorite sports on campus, the Mid-Valley Campus Library.
“My favorite part about STC is the library,” she said. “The staff are so friendly and helpful, and they have so many resources. It’s one of the best places to study and just take a breather.”
As she continues her journey at STC, Grimaldo hopes to one day turn her passion for drawing and storytelling into a career in animation. She dreams of creating work that inspires others.
With each class, each drawing and each new opportunity, Grimaldo is proving that pursuing your passion is never out of reach, especially when you have the courage to take the first step.
