February 2025 – Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s correction at the Texas Policy Summit was aimed at countering claims from school choice opponents regarding the impact of a universal school choice program in Texas. The key points of his correction included:
- Public Education Funding – He asserted that public education would continue fully funded, countering concerns that a school choice program would divert essential resources from public schools.
- Inclusivity of the Program – He emphasized that the school choice initiative would be available to all Texas families, regardless of their region, demographic, or socioeconomic status.
- Per-Student Funding Levels – He highlighted that per-student funding had reached an all-time high of over $15,000, disputing claims that school choice would reduce public school funding.
- Homeschooling Protections – He reassured parents who homeschool their children that they would retain control over their curriculum, addressing fears that school choice policies might impose new regulations on homeschoolers.
According to Abbott, the correction was necessary because school choice opponents were spreading misinformation about the policy, particularly by suggesting that it would defund public education or create disparities. His remarks aimed to reaffirm his position that school choice would enhance Texas education by introducing competition and empowering parents with more options.
