Washington, D.C. – A group of Republican lawmakers has reintroduced legislation aimed at eliminating federal taxes on Social Security benefits, a move aligning with former President Donald Trump’s pledge to stop seniors from being taxed on their retirement earnings.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) announced Thursday that he has reintroduced H.R.1040, the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act, which seeks to remove taxes on Social Security benefits derived from previously taxed income. Initially proposed in May 2023, the bill aims to alleviate what proponents call an unfair “double tax” on seniors.
Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) and Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) introduced similar legislation in the Senate, reinforcing the effort to amend the Internal Revenue Code 1986 and eliminate federal taxation on Social Security and Tier I railroad retirement benefits.
The bill has gained support from advocacy groups such as the Association of Mature American Citizens Action (AMAC Action). Senior Vice President Andy Mangione called the taxation of Social Security benefits “nonsensical” and argued that it reduces retirement funds that seniors rightfully deserve.
While the legislation has strong backing from Republican lawmakers and senior advocacy groups, how it will fare in Congress remains to be seen. The bill could provide much-needed financial relief to millions of retired Americans if passed.
