Texas Border Business –
McAllen, TX – Members of the public are invited to become citizen scientists during the BioBlitz on Saturday, October 8th, 9 am to 11 am at Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center. A BioBlitz is an event taking place around Texas where members become “citizen scientists” and work with naturalists to survey an area to record all plants and animals they can find. The valuable information will be used by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to create a snapshot of the wildlife present in our state at this time of year.
The BioBlitz will include birdwatching at Quinta Mazatlan with naturalist John Brush. Brush will also lead a Big Sit on Saturday, October 8th from 8 am to 5 pm. The celebration kicks off fall birding migration and programs. Join other birders as they count all of the birds seen and heard from a 17 foot circle in the amphitheater. Last year over 70 species of birds were spotted between dawn and dusk! In this “tailgate party for birders,” you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in nature – without even leaving your chair!
Stop by for a fun day full of nature! We will be on the lookout for all pollinators including butterflies, bees and moths, bats, hummingbirds, wasps, flies, and beetles. All ages are encouraged to come out and help find pollinators and nectar-producing plants. Let’s encourage planting of native plants and gardens in our communities, schools and backyards!
Both events are free with general admission to the urban sanctuary, $3 adults and $2 children, 4 and under free. Binoculars and field guides will be provided. Quinta Mazatlan is located one block south of La Plaza Mall on 600 Sunset Drive, McAllen, TX. For more information please visit www.quintamazatlan.com or call (956) 681-3700.
