BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) is proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2024 Workforce Excellence Award from the Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC) in the Regional Category. This recognition celebrates our impactful contributions to the community and our successful workforce initiatives.

One key initiative that contributed to this recognition is Rally In The Valley – South Texas’ Premier Internship Expo. Through Rally In The Valley, we have successfully connected over 1,000 students with internship opportunities and valuable resources for their professional development. Additionally, employers participating in Rally In The Valley benefit from our partnership with TXWORKS, which provides resources and funding to subsidize intern salaries, creating a win-win situation for students and businesses.

“TEDC awarded Workforce Excellence Awards to seven recipients in their respective population categories, with Brownsville winning the Regional Category. We appreciate the outstanding work done by Karla De La Riva, our former Workforce Director, who created and pioneered this initiative.” stated Jerry Briones, Deputy Executive Director of GBIC, ”by connecting students with real-world opportunities and resources, we are not only shaping their professional paths but also strengthening the economic future of our community.”

The Workforce Excellence Award program recognizes exceptional contributions by a Texas community or region implementing successful workforce initiatives. Applications from the nominees were reviewed and scored by members of the TEDC’s Workforce Development Committee based on five criteria: innovativeness, transferability, community commitment and leverage, measured objectives, and secondary benefits.
