EDINBURG, Texas – The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded $1.1 million to Region One Education Service Center in collaboration with Donna, Hidalgo, Roma and Valley View Independent School Districts to strengthen college readiness programs over the next four years.
The funding will expand early college and dual credit opportunities, improve advising services and enhance data tracking to increase college enrollment rates. Expanding college and career opportunities for students, aligns efforts with House Bill 3 and 8 funding that will benefit school districts and higher education partners.

In partnership with South Texas College, this work will align high school and college courses, remove testing barriers and expand structured dual credit pathways. This initiative aims to help students enroll in early college coursework, earn at least 15 college credits before graduation and successfully transition to post-secondary education.
“This funding strengthens the support we already provide to school systems, allowing us to expand early college and dual credit opportunities in a way that directly impacts students’ futures,” said Region One Executive Director Dr. Daniel P. King. “Our goal has always been to open doors for students, giving them access to the education and experiences they need for high-wage, in-demand careers. With this funding, we will equip more students with the tools to succeed in college.”
