Edinburg, TX – Former State Representative Aaron Peña has filed paperwork to begin his candidacy to be a Justice on the 13th Court of Appeals. The Edinburg native released the following statement in support of his run for the court anchored in his South Texas community:

“I’ve spent the last two months traveling this twenty-county judicial district speaking with members of the community about bringing a necessary balance to the court. From Hidalgo to Hallettsville the response has been overwhelmingly positive. As a result, today I am announcing my candidacy for 13th Court of Appeals. My background in the community, in the courtroom, as a former legislator and on the legal teams of two Texas state agencies gives me the necessary insight and understanding of the legal and judicial system central to the work of an appellate justice on the Court of Appeals.”

Aaron Peña, is a lifelong Valley resident and a practicing attorney with over 33 years of legal experience. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with his Bachelor’s degree in Government and later attended law school at Texas Southern University. Peña graduated in 1987, was licensed in 1988 and later obtained his board specialization certification in 1995. As a State Representative Peña served as Chairman of the Committee of Criminal Jurisprudence, the Chairman of the Committee of Technology and as Chairman of the Select Committee on Emergency Preparedness.

If elected, it will be my responsibility to fairly and consistently follow the law. I will bring honesty and integrity to the bench and will work diligently to earn the respect of those who appear before me.”

The 13th Court of Appeals serves the following counties: Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, Cameron, De Witt, Goliad, Gonzales, Hidalgo, Jackson, Kenedy, Kleberg, Lavaca, Live Oak, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Victoria, Wharton, and Willacy.

Peña’s name will appear on the Republican primary ballot presently scheduled to take place on March 1st, 2022. Early voting starts on February 14, 2022. These dates are subject to change due to delays caused by the redistricting process.
