Rio Grande Valley, TX – The Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation), one of the nation’s preeminent children’s health organizations, named five IDEA schools as some of ‘America’s Healthiest Schools.’

IDEA Academy McAllen was awarded a silver medal, and bronze medals were awarded to IDEA Academy Brownsville, IDEA Frontier College Prep, IDEA College Prep McAllen, and IDEA Weslaco Pike Academy.

Schools are awarded based on the number of best practices they have implemented relating to children’s health. Healthier Generation’s team of school health experts evaluate schools based on their ability to serve healthier meals and snacks, get students moving more, offer high-quality health and physical education, and support staff wellness.

  • Meet or exceed federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks
  • Offer breakfast daily
  • Incorporate physical activity before, during or after the school day
  • Implement district wellness policies and update progress annually
  • Involve parents and community members in decision-making

These IDEA schools are five schools among the 75 schools in Texas and 355 schools in the nation to achieve this distinction.

“We are thrilled to have five of our schools in the Rio Grande Valley named as some of America’s Healthiest Schools,” says Eva Rodriguez, IDEA Public Schools’ Healthy Kids Here Manager. “We are dedicated to creating a healthier school environment that supports our scholars physical, social, and emotional health.”

All IDEA schools participate in the Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program, one of the nation’s largest school-based childhood obesity prevention initiatives that fosters a comprehensive approach to health promotion driven by administrators, teachers, counselors, parents, and the surrounding community.
