Fernanda Espinosa Ortiz is working toward an associate degree in Criminal Justice at South Texas College, with plans to continue her education by earning a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership and with only two semesters left before graduating, Ortiz has already found a new passion helping and inspiring others through leadership.

Her interest in criminal justice began early. Inspired by crime investigation shows like NCIS, she was drawn to the idea of working in forensic science. In high school, she joined the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program for forensic technology and graduated with a certification from STC.

“I always thought criminal justice was fascinating,” Ortiz said. “My mom encouraged me to go for it since there aren’t a lot of women in the field, but once I got to STC, I discovered a new passion – leadership.”

That shift happened when Ortiz became involved with student leadership. She started by assisting the Communication and Creative Services department as a student model, then joined the Student Ambassadors program. At first, she was shy and hesitant to participate.

“I was super quiet,” Ortiz said. “I couldn’t even walk into the office and talk to Cristobal, our program coordinator. But over time, he and the other student ambassadors saw potential in me and helped me break out of my shell.”

Ortiz is referring to Cristobal Benavidez, STC coordinator of College Connections and the direct supervisor of the Student Ambassadors.

Now, Ortiz serves as vice president of the Student Ambassadors, a role that allows her to lead campus tours, assist with events and speak in front of large crowds.

“I fell in love with it,” she said. “That’s why I decided to study organizational leadership I want to keep both career paths open.”

Ortiz first learned about STC’s programs while attending high school, where she was introduced to dual credit opportunities. Her older sister, who earned her EMT certification through STC, also played a role in guiding her academic choices.

“My sister took the EMT program in high school, but I wasn’t interested in medicine,” Ortiz said. “Then I saw forensic technology was going to be a new option for my junior year, and I immediately wanted to join.”

Currently, Ortiz takes four online classes to allow more flexibility for her leadership responsibilities.

“Spring is our busiest season because of all the high school tours and events,” she said. “Being online gives me the free time I need to be involved.”

Ortiz said her biggest source of motivation is her mother.

“She’s my everything,” Ortiz said. “She was my mom and dad for most of my life, and she’s always been my biggest supporter. She brought us here for a better future, and I want to make her proud.”

Although she doesn’t yet have a set career plan, Ortiz knows she wants to work in a field that involves traveling and public speaking.

“I’ve learned that I love interacting with people,” she said. “I don’t know exactly what I’ll do yet, but I want to keep my options open.”

Ortiz encourages other students to get involved on campus, especially through the Student Ambassadors program.

“We are the students’ first impression when they come in,” she said. “It’s a great way to meet people, gain confidence and represent STC in the community.”

With a growing passion for leadership and a commitment to personal growth, Ortiz is ready to take on any opportunity that comes her way. For more information on the different clubs and organizations offered at STC, visit https://life.southtexascollege.edu/list-of-active-student-organizations/.
