McALLEN, Texas – With years of work experience behind him, Juan Martinez said he enrolled in South Texas College’s Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) program this fall with his son, John, with a goal of building a foundation for their family’s future.

Martinez, 50, says returning to college was more than just advancing his career, it was about setting an example that proves to his children that it is never too late to continue learning.

Both Martinez’s are earning their associate degrees in HVAC, but their goals go beyond the classroom. Together, they hope to transition their technical skills into a business that combines their current degree choice in HVACR with expertise in construction and welding.

“We want to try something new because hopefully we will get into selling and installing our own AC units. That’s our dream.” Juan said. “Getting our associate degrees will give us that additional experience to help us on our way with our future plans.”

John had already earned two certificates in structural and combination welding by the time he graduated high school and later completed his associate degree in Welding, also through STC.

Along with helping his father, he hopes to one day build and sell homes or manage rental properties with the help of his younger brother, who is also enrolled in Welding at STC.

“I want to see what else I can do because I’m still young and I feel I have the options to do something amazing,” John said. “I am excited to try out new things and see what happens from the choices I make. Let’s see where this path leads.”

Juan said returning to college has been about growth as much as opportunity. By attending STC, he hopes to leave behind knowledge for his children so they can stand on their own and build a sustainable future.

“I’m trying to improve myself by not just focusing on one thing,” he said. “At the end of the day, I want my children to realize that if I can do it, they can do it too. I’m just trying to lead them the right way, down the right path so it will help them in the future.”

When asked about their work ethic and motivation, both father and son spoke about discipline and the importance of having a “Plan B.” Juan encourages his children not to give up easily and to always seek new knowledge.

John echoed that sentiment, saying education provides a foundation to fall back on while also opening new opportunities.

“I believe in never taking a step down. I think you always have to stand with your head held high and look ahead with positivity rather than negativity,” John said. “All in all, I am enjoying this experience of attending STC with my father and look forward to many more moments as we earn our degree together.”
