PHARR – In 2025, there was a significant 25-percent decrease in the number of crash fatalities in the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Pharr District, compared to the previous year.
A total number of 86 fatal crashes resulting in 92 fatalities were recorded in 2025, compared to the 114 fatal crashes and 124 fatalities recorded in 2024. The numbers represent 32 fewer fatalities and the fewest number of lives lost in roadway crashes in the past five years.
The TxDOT Pharr District encompasses the eight southernmost counties of Texas: Brooks, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, Starr, Willacy, and Zapata.

The factors in these fatal crashes saw numbers drop from year-to-year but the top factors remained the same. Topping the list of factors are crashes in “Rural Areas”, “Speed Related” crashes, “Driving Under the Influence (All)”, “Single Vehicle, Run-Off-The-Road” crashes and “Intersection Related” crashes.
The number of alcohol related crashes, crashes involving unbuckled drivers and passengers, and motorcycle crashes remained about the same, but did see slight reductions in 2025.

“We are pleased to see a decline in crashes but even one fatal crash on our roadways is one too many,” said TxDOT Pharr District Engineer Pete Alvarez. “Our team will continue to analyze and implement safety enhancements on our roadways, and we’ll continue to educate the traveling public about traffic safety. Risky behavior behind the wheel has consequences. We will alsocontinue to partner with law enforcement on safety initiatives.”
