McAllen, TX (September 27, 2017) – Students at South Texas College may begin applying for their Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Oct. 1.

For those who want to file as early as possible, students are urged to go online to https://fafsa.ed.gov/ to get started on their free application.

Current and continuing students are reminded that they must reapply every year for financial aid.

“There is no reason to wait, the FAFSA now requires income information from two years prior.  So, students and parents should have already filed their 2016 income tax returns by now.  We encourage students to submit the FAFSA now and avoid the lines,” said Juan Miguel Galvan, STC Director of Student Financial Services. “Students can come to any campus with the required documents and we have knowledgeable staff available to guide them through the FAFSA process.

“We would like to send this message to all high school seniors, returning and continuing college students to apply now and have a peace of mind that their funds will be available when they begin registering for classes in fall 2018,” Galvan said.

STC will also hold a free event in November to assist students with registering students for financial aid. The college will hold its fall Super Saturday event at its three main campuses; Starr, Pecan and Mid-Valley on November 11 from 9 am to 2 pm.

The event will be a one-stop shop for students to complete their FAFSA or their Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) to avoid long lines or delays.

“This event is about promoting the 2018-2019 FAFSA and TASFA submission,” Galvan said. “We are partnering with RGV Focus and other higher education institutions so students can begin working on their FAFSA or TASFA now instead of waiting until later.”
