Martinez’s areas of expertise are literary criticism, science fiction and American literature. Martinez’s reviews and articles have been published in the Los Angeles Review of Books, The New York Review of Science Fiction and The Science Fiction Research Association Review.
He has been invited for presentations and panel discussions at the International Conference of the Fantastic in the Arts, the WisCon Feminist Science Fiction Conference and The Science Fiction Research Association Conference.
Martinez received a bachelor’s degree in English in 1990 from The University of Texas at Austin. He received a master’s degree in English in 1993 at The University of Texas – Pan American in Edinburg. He received his doctoral degree in English in 1998 from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
Martinez began his academic career as an instructor at UTPA in September 1991. From there, Martinez was a tutor and instructor at The Ohio State University and an instructor and chair of the Honors Program at South Texas College in McAllen. He came to UTB in January 1999 as an Assistant to the President and moved to the Department of English in September 2001. While in the department, Martinez has been a lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor and department chair. He became Dean of the College of Liberal Arts in 2012.
